Rather than switching between two separate files, one tool handles both stages efficiently. The 100 grit side shapes and refines the nail edge while the 180 grit side smooths the surface for the final pre-shine result.
How to Use a Dual Grit Buffer
Start with the 100 grit side to shape the nail edge and remove any ridges or surface imperfections that need more abrasive action. Once the nail has the desired shape and a reasonably smooth surface, flip to the 180 grit side to refine and smooth further, removing the scratch marks left by the coarser 100 grit and creating a consistently smooth surface ready for base coat or polish application.

100/180 grit is appropriate for natural nail filing and surface preparation. Do not use this buffer on gel or acrylic products where more aggressive grits are needed for effective material removal. For gel and acrylic surface work use sanding bands with a nail drill or dedicated gel/acrylic abrasive files.
